Session objectives

  • To know some basic ideas of how to write an appropriate prompt for Google Gemini;
  • To know some limitations of using Artificial Intelligence;
  • To know some practical applications of using Google Gemini to support teaching and learning;

Intended outcomes

  • Teachers will leave with practical methods of utilising Google Gemini to support teaching and learning and to manage workload.
  • They will be able to use Gemini to create writing models, create an interactive “conversation” with historical figures, and apply Gemini to other tasks in their own contexts.

Session outline

This presentation will begin by defining artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI. It will then proceed to explore various applications and websites that utilise generative AI, analysing their respective strengths and drawbacks. The focus will subsequently shift to Google Gemini.

The presenter will emphasize the critical role of crafting high-quality prompts, illustrating this with examples of effective and less effective prompts.

Finally, the presentation will demonstrate practical applications of Google Gemini in educational contexts, specifically addressing its potential to support teaching, learning, and reduce teacher workload. This will include:

  • Generating model texts for reading and writing instruction.
  • Creating word banks and vocabulary lists.
  • Developing lesson plans and structural outlines.
  • Providing feedback on written work.

Suitable for

Primary Class Teachers who are new to the idea of using AI

It will be advantageous for attendees to have access to Google Gemini and be ready to use it during the session.

Facilitator

Gareth Dyer

Gareth has been a primary school teacher for approximately 19 years. During that time, he has planned and delivered training on a range of subjects and in different contexts. This includes Mathematics (Place Value, Calculation, Geometry) and Design and Technology sessions for Initial Teacher Training, where he was Quality Assured and received very positive feedback. He has planned and delivered day-long STEM training linked to Design and Technology for the STEM Learning Centre, specifically aimed at subject leaders (Help! I’m new to being a STEM Leader). He has planned and delivered school-specific training for many years, on a range of subject areas including Space, Computing (Physical Programming), and Mathematics. He has worked alongside Pathfinder TSH to deliver training on teaching Science through problem-solving and inquiry (the TEMI project). Within his own school, he has regularly planned and delivered training on subjects such as Design and Technology, Artificial Intelligence, 3D Printing, and using the Google Education materials.
