Webinar Overview

This is webinar 1 of 2 in a mini series of professional learning for anyone training to teach. Designed and delivered by Andrew Young, Co-Director of Pathfinder Teaching School Hub and Author of Adaptive Teaching: Culture to Classroom (Crown House Publishing). This professional learning webinar is here to give you, the Teacher Trainee, practical strategies and deep understanding to become an even more powerful advocate for the pupils you support.

Labels are necessary but not sufficient. By focusing less on individual labels (“me”) and more on collective barriers to learning (“we”), such as: cognitive load, executive functioning, and working memory, we begin to see the wood through the trees. This webinar will explore 2 of 4 essential ingredients for adaptive teaching to be effective – culture and brains.

The aim is to avoid pathologising individuals with additional needs by championing habits of collective affirmation and classroom strategy. Let’s ensure “SEND” isn’t the only way we ever think about the child…

  • Initial Teacher Trainees, Student Teachers, Trainees
  • Undergraduate students on Education-related courses at University
  • Trainee Apprentices
  • Teachers on the Assessment Only Route
  • You might find this useful if you are an ECT Yr1 or Yr2 colleague
  • ITT Mentors, Lead Mentors, ITT Coordinators or similar
  • Consider why a culture of collectivism is essential for running the room and creating an inclusive classroom environment
  • Reflect on asset-based vs. deficit based language around SEND and bust some common misconceptions
  • Unpick research around SEND from a class teacher’s perspective and know more about dyslexia, autism spectrum condition, speech and language conditions, and ADHD.
  • Learn more about the cognitive similarity between pupils and gain an insight into working memory, cognitive load and executive function

Andrew Young  is Co-Director of Pathfinder Teaching School Hub and Education Partnership.
